Obama Calls for ‘Common Sense’ on Executive Pay

By EDMUND L. ANDREWS and VIKAS BAJAJ

WASHINGTON — President Obama announced on Wednesday a salary cap of $500,000 for top executives at companies that receive the largest amounts of bailout money, calling the step an expression not only of fairness but of “basic common sense.”

*call for…

*step

an action, proceeding, or measure often occurring as one in a series steps to improve the situation>

*not only …but (also)

“We all need to take responsibility,” the president said as he prompted Congress once again to act on his economic stimulus program and repeated comments that some Wall Street executives had shown “the height of irresponsibility” when millions of nonwealthy Americans were bearing the burden of Wall Street’s failures.

*take responsibility    책임을 지다

*once again = once more [once again은 구술체이지 문어체는 아닙니다.

* be [is, are, am, was, were,] bearing the burden of…

The people are sick and tired, Mr. Obama said, of seeing Wall Street executives come to the government “hat in hand when they were in trouble, even as they paid themselves customary lavish bonuses.”

* be sick and tired of …ing …

* hat in hand [숙어적 표현, 공손하게, 굽실굽실, 비굴하게 ]

* be in trouble 곤궁에 빠지다.

1: expending or bestowing profusely : prodigal

2 a: expended or produced in abundance b: marked by profusion or excess

synonyms see profuse

“This is America, we don’t disparage wealth,” the president said. “We don’t begrudge anybody for achieving success. And we certainly believe that success should be rewarded.”

* disparage

1 : to lower in rank or reputation : degrade

2 : to depreciate by indirect means (as invidious comparison) : speak slightingly about

synonyms see decry

* begrudge

1 : to give or concede reluctantly or with displeasure <begrudge money> <begrudged the weeks spent away from home>

2 : to look upon with disapproval <begrudge their rivals' success>

But Americans definitely begrudge “executives being rewarded for failure,” especially if their earning are subsidized by taxpayers, “many of whom are having a tough time themselves,” he said.
