강정마을 공권력 투입 우려 “70년 전 폭력의 역사 제주도에서 재현되는 듯”

31일 한국정책연구소 연구원(Fellow, Korea Policy Institute)인 시몬 천 정치학 박사에 따르면 촘스키 교수는 최근 박 대통령에게 무력 행정대집행 중단을 요청하는 친서를 보냈다.

시몬 천 교수는 영국 출신의 노벨 평화상 후보였던 엔지 젤터 등을 포함한 여러 국제학자들도 대집행에 반대하는 편지를 박 대통령과 반기문 유엔사무총장에게 보냈다고 전했다.

촘스키 교수는 4만명 가까이 희생된 제주 학살 사건(4.3)을 언급한 후 70년이 지난 오늘 비극과 같은 폭력의 역사가 제주도에 재현되고 있는 듯하다고 밝혔다.

강정에서 수천명의 용역과 경찰을 동원해 평화 행동가들을 무력으로 해산시키려는 행정대집행을 중단할 것을 박 대통령에게 강하게 요청했다.

Honorable President Park Geun-hye:

As you know, between 1948 and 1949, approximately, 40,000 residents in Jeju Island were massacred by South Korean army which was at the time under the control of the U.S. Interim Military Government. The massacre left more than 50 percent of homes in Jeju Island destroyed, 40,000 residents seeking refugee in Japan, and survivors, descendants, family members with tragic memories and trauma. More than 70 years later, the tragic and violent history seems to repeat in Jeju Island.

I have learned that on January 31, 2015, more than 1000 scabs and police force supported by the Korean army are expected to forcefully disband villagers and activists who have been engaging in a peaceful 24-hour protest in front of the construction site of the new housing for 3000 navy personnel. We respectfully request that you stop the planned attack on Gangjeong villagers by the Korean army and police. You had promised a departure from the iron-fisted policies of your predecessor, declaring your intention to lead the nation based on a policy of social consensus, respect for human rights, and justice. We hope that you keep your promise.
